2012 Relit: EVANGELISTS- A BILL AND 2 BILLYS

They had a passion to lead others to personal faith in Jesus Christ. Each man, born in a different century, impacted his world with the gospel. One built chapels where he preach-ed and people came to know Jesus. The other two built ministry organizations God greatly used.

Bill Bright (1921-2003)

What he did before he started preaching: Ran a business called Bill’s Epicurean Delights, selling gourmet food.

What turned him to Christianity: A Bible lesson taught by Henrietta Mears of Hollywood First Presbyterian Church.

Beginning of Bill Bright post: Bill didn’t take Christianity seriously while growing up in Oklahoma. As an adult he concluded religion was good for women and children. Then something happened. Bill became a Christian and wanted everyone on earth to hear the gospel message.

What he did before he started preaching: Worked in a tin mine and indulged in telling vulgar stories, drinking, and fighting.

What turned him to Christianity: Reading the book Visions of Heaven and Hell by John Bunyan.

Beginning of Billy Bray post: It was payday. What would Billy Bray, a mine worker known for his vices, do? Would he squander his earnings at the tavern and wander home drunk as usual? Or would his plea the night before for God to save his soul matter? When he got home that night…

What he did before he started preaching: Played professional baseball for the Chicago White Stockings.

What turned him to Christianity: An outdoor service by workers from Chicago’s Pacific Garden Mission.

Beginning of Billy Sunday post: A simple, straight-forward message. A bold presentation. A clear call to repentance. In his heyday, evangelist Billy Sunday was a modern-day Elijah or John the Baptist. His preach-ing attracted crowds by the thousands… The former baseball player spent most of his life at bat for eternal home runs.
